About Us

Mission

The mission of Friends of the Astor House Museum and Clear Creek History Park is to connect people to the history of our 1800s hotel and homestead. We encourage our visitors to explore how the people of Golden, Colorado settled a bustling town that served the developing West as a government center and mining supply town.

Who we are

The Friends of the Astor House Museum and Clear Creek History Park (Friends) have successfully managed and operated the Astor House Museum and Clear Creek History Park since 1998. Friends is a federally recognized 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. Both museum sites are owned by the City of Golden, which contracts with Friends to manage, provide programming for and care for the two sites. The City provides management oversight through its Planning Department.

Our community includes more than 250 dues-paying members, many corporate members, a year-round professional staff of seven plus a summer staff of five, over 100 volunteers and a Board of Directors. We invite you to join us—as a member, a volunteer, or staff.

We serve more than 20,000 visitors a year at our two sites. We welcome families, tourists, history buffs, summer campers, curious folks and groups of all kinds. In addition to scout groups and senior groups, we share Colorado history with 2,800 school students every year.

Our financial support comes largely from our ticket sales and admissions, the donations of community members, the City of Golden, the SCFD and foundations including The Denver Foundation and Golden Civic Foundation. We annually file taxes with the IRS and State of Colorado and participate in Colorado’s Charitable Solicitations program. Our federal tax ID is 84-1473577. If you have questions about our funding and finances, please don’t hesitate to call our Executive Director. We take fiscal accountability and transparency very seriously.
